Following the quick sale of her Sydney mansion last year, Australian actor Cate Blanchett has a new place to call home. Two-time Oscar winning Australian actress and her playwright-director husband Andrew Upton have purchased a historic English manor in East Sussex for £3 million (somewhere around $4.5 million). The home sits on 13 acres of land in the English countryside and was built in 1890. The home had fallen into disrepair over the years, but was extensively renovated and restored to its previous grandeur with bespoke materials and hand crafted finishes. It has seven bedrooms, eight full and two half bathrooms as well as five reception rooms.
A 19th-century French chandelier hangs in the reception hall, with a large oak staircase leading up to the second level. Featuring large bay windows and Belgian stone kitchen sink, work tops and tiling, the home also comes complete with its own turret. There’s also a cozy study/library, a colossal eat-in kitchen, and an unexpectedly wee family room. The Arcadian estate’s verdant grounds offer vast lawns, a private pond with island, and an array of mostly decrepit outbuildings.
This Victorian mansion boasts of glorified past owners including Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
