A giant diamond among the largest ever discovered was recently unearthed in Lulo, Angola. A whopping 404.2-carat gemstone was founded by miners from Australia’s Lucapa Diamond Company and is estimated to worth at least $20 million AUD (approx. $14.36 million USD). The 7-centimeter (25-inch) long diamond is the largest ever found in the southern African nation of Angola – and the 27th-biggest diamond ever recorded in the world. By value, Angola is the fourth-largest diamond producer in the world.

In addition to its massive size, the Lulo diamond is noteworthy because it’s categorized as a Type IIa stone – meaning it’s virtually flawless. It’s also D-colored, or entirely colorlessvirtually flawless. That is the rarest – and likely most valuable – color grade for a white diamond, according to the Gemological Institute of America.
Last November, a different mining company, Lucara, recovered a 1,111 carat diamond in Botswana.
