WW2 forts built to protect Kent coast from Nazi attack is set to be transformed into luxury hotel that will see guests arrive by helicopter. The huge metal Maunsell gun towers – also known as Red Sands is mapped by many construction companies as a perfect location, given that the last time it had its utility value as a pirate radio station during the 60s of the last century. The design of concrete structures is like military bunkers placed on poles that are buried deep in the water. Many rare species of fish live in the immediate vicinity of the fort.
Although today these findings seem bizarre, they are in very good condition so represent a real challenge for many construction and design company.
London-based Next Big Thing has put forward a proposal to transform the seven iconic metal structures that are located in the Thames Estuary off the Kent coast.
The hotel would be an exclusive venue with SPA centers, bars, restaurants, shops, and terraces that would be located on the roof of the fortress.
The 44-room hotel would be located in the former 4 turrets with standard penthouses and apartments on offer, while the old lighthouse is conceived as museum.
But the conversion needs to happen in the next five to 10 years or the forts will drop into the sea.
‘The proposed Hotel will retain the outline of the Forts as they are and have been for 72 years but the development work both inside and out will be for the developer to decide,’ said project manager David Cooper.
