Less than a month from the day of Prince’s death and his motorcycle jacket that hew wore in the 1984 Purple Rain film will be offered on sale. The V-neck jacket, which is black with white cross-hatching and has leather sleeves from the elbows down, will go under the hammer in Profiles in History’s auction between June 29 and July 1 in Calabasas, California, where is predicted to fetch as much as $100,000.
“Prince memorabilia in general, it just really doesn’t exist. It seems like he controlled it all,” Joe Maddalena, president of the auction house Profiles in History, told the AP. “This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his (personal) wardrobe.”
According to Profiles in History’s client relations expert Brain Chanes, the auction house received the jacket about six weeks before Prince’s death on 21 April.
The jacket comes from an original seller who claims her sister was a makeup artist involved with the film.
In addition, the auction will also feature Britney Spears’s costumes from her hit music video “Baby One More Time”, as well as Katy Perry and Alicia Keys’s outfits.
