It’s not very often that you come across a spirit that’s actually older than your grandparents. But, Spanish winemaker Barbadillo, has produced a limited edition series of Amontillado Sherry which is 125 years old. It belongs to the one of the oldest and rarest types of sherry that can be found on the market, in case you you have £ 8,000 ($11,550) to spare. If you can afford it, it is necessary to enjoy the taste which offers the best in an atmosphere where nothing disturbs the impression of Amontillado sherry.
It was created from the Versos 1891 which was originally a gift to Manuel Barbadillo from his father as a christening present, way back in 1891. Aged in an old American cask in the humid cellars of Barbadillo, Andalusia, generations of winemakers from the Barbadillo family have acted as its custodians all throughout. The result of the perfect humid conditions and incredible care is a fine Amontillado Sherry, with a deep mahogany color and an incredibly pungent rich nutty aroma. The powerful flavor comes in a dry, rich bouquet complemented by dried fruits and antique wood.
The exclusive sherry is presented in a handmade crystal glass decanter crafted by the Portuguese glassmakers Atlantis. It is shaped like a traditional ink well in homage to Manuel’s status as a poet. The decanter is finished with platinum paint on the collar and has Versos etched into the glass in gold leaf. This is then further encased in an exclusively designed Spanish leather box made in Ubrique in the Sierra of Cadiz in Andalusia, home of some of the world’s finest luxury leather craftsmen.
