Wealthy Brazilian man has started an avalanche of negative comments when he announced on his Facebook page that he plans to bury his beloved Bentley Continental Flying Spur. Chiquinho Scarpa, 62, has announced that he would bury his £310,000 (€367,220) Bentley so that he would be able to drive it in the afterlife. He explained that he has taken inspiration from Egyptian Pharaohs, who were buried with much of their treasures.
He even posted the photos himself digging a hole for a car in the courtyard of his home in Sao Paulo, which caused more comments. Of course, most were negative and directed against the wealthy eccentric, marking him as a madman who wants to do something foolish, instead to give a car for charity.
However, after some time the story was given a different course. Scarpa appeared at a press conference dedicated to organ donation. Banner behind him wore the inscription “It’s absurd to bury something that is more valuable than a Bentley: your organs.” Also, Scarpa held the card saying: “I’m an organ donor, and you?”
It turns out everything was an ingenious publicity stunt to promote organ donation. For all those wondering whether he had buried the Bentley after all, the description of the photo explained everything:
“I have not buried my car, but everyone thought it absurd when I said I’d do it. It is absurd to bury their bodies, which can save many lives. Nothing is more valuable. Be a donor, tell your family”.
