Sri Lanka suffers from no shortage of fine hotels, but thanks Cape Weligama, on the island’s south coast, a few miles from Galle, this image changes drastically. This luxury hotel blazes its own trail — and what’s unique about it is that it finds its identity by looking to the past. Laid out village-style over an Indian Ocean headland, each butler-attended contemporary villa – designed by architect Lek Bunnag and outfitted to five-star standard – sits within a flower-scented watta (garden), steps from a cooling pool.
The freestanding Residences cluster around private pools, while the larger Villas are divided into multiple suites, which means they’re perfect for families or larger parties.
The resort features four restaurants that set the bar for fine dining in Sri Lanka. A gourmet paradise, Cape Weligama pays homage to its location with the day’s freshest catch selected by you at Pola ( the Sinhalese word for ‘market’) and cooked to order at the Ocean Terrace restaurant.
Enjoy the scintillating experience of famed Sri Lanka spa hotels, from the sanctity of your own suite or villa. For the ultimate Ceylonese indulgence, Cape Weligama’s experienced therapists come to your Suite or Villa where dedicated spa facilities allow us to pamper you. Or opt to have a ‘spa day’, at the resort’s dedicated Spa Villa.
Cape Weligama boasts what is likely the best infinity pool in Sri Lanka! A breathtaking crescent-shaped Moon Pool curving 60m around the cape’s summit drinks in every inch of the spectacular 270-degree coastal views. It’s equally resplendent at night when the pool’s inky surface reflects the stars and the bright luminescence of the moon.
The generous Cove Pool, close to the Suites, meanders around an integrated 20m-lap pool, and is ideal for kids. The Moon Bar – secreted under the Moon Pool – erects a large screen on occasion to host convivial movie nights with popcorn and international sports fixtures with special themed snacks and drinks.
Hotel facilities also include a Cybex equipped air-conditioned gym for keeping in shape after overindulging on the resort’s mouth-watering cuisine. Electric buggies convey guests around the resort if they prefer not to walk. There are two adjacent public beaches. West Beach is accessed via a specially built cliff staircase. East Beach is next to the Sports Centre, a 5-minute walk from the resort. A reef provides safe swimming conditions.
