Sotheby’s is pleased to present A Rock & Roll Anthology: From Folk to Fury, a kaleidoscopic survey of the history of rock & roll, pop, folk, and punk. Featuring important manuscripts and memorabilia from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Eagles, and a rare offering from the Sex Pistols’ seminal album Never Mind the Bollocks (the original working autograph manuscript of “Problems”), among others.
John Lennons Sgt. Peppers Piano
A highlight of the sale is John Lennon’s Broadwood Upright Piano upon which he composed “A Day in the Life,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” and many other iconic songs from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. The red-and-black John Broadwood and Sons cottage upright piano, which was housed in Lennon’s Kenwood home is estimated to sell for between $1.2 and $1.8 million.

Lennon’s Sgt. Pepper’s piano comes with a plaque, installed by Lennon in 1971, denoting that the instrument was used to pen “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “A Day in the Life,” “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” and “Good Morning Good Morning.”
Lennon’s “Imagine” piano, featured on the 1970 classic, sold at auction for $2.1 million in 2000, while a Lennon-played Gibson J-160E reached a dizzying closing bid of $2.4 million in November 2015.
