The apartment, known as the Astor Suite, in New York’s historic Plaza Hotel has just been put on the market for US$39.5 million. An opulent nearly 4,300-square-foot home has a long list of famous former residents, including millionaire businessman John Jacob Astor, former US president John F Kennedy and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The three bedroom, five-and-a-half bathroom suite, designed by SR Gambre is still lavishly decorated with “hand drawn plaster ceilings, English oak paneling, antique fireplace mantles, and hand-hammered leather walls from France.
Famous residents, as well as the suites location inside the iconic Plaza Hotel, has led to it being described in its listing as “one of the most historic homes ever to become available in the United States.”
Berfore hit the market, the Astor Suite at the Plaza Hotel hold a title as New York City’s most expensive rental, because its owner, Esprit founder Jurgen Friedrich, found someone to rent the palatial pad for an eye-popping $125,000 per month. It’s not the first time Friedrich has tried to sell the place; he purchased it for $25 million in 2007, and attempted to flip it just one year later for $55.5 million.
