Installation by eccentric artist Yayoi Kusama, whose value is estimated at $1million, was damaged in a bizarre “Selfie incident.”
It is about the exhibition titled “Infinity Mirrored Room — All the Eternal Love I have for the Pumpkins,” ie rooms lined with mirrors where in the semi-darkness are black and yellow hand painted pumpkins.
Each visitor gets the opportunity to enter into a glass room for thirty seconds with the door closed, without security. Therefore, no one noticed when the damage occurred on one of the pumpkins.
Several media reports, referring to the two visitors who were present at that fatal moment, that the damage occurred when one person tried to make Selfie.
It is unclear how much damage has, because the smasched pumpkin is just one aspect of large installations, but “Artnet News” quoted that similar piece sold as a stand-alone work, went for around $800,000 at auction in 2015.
