Apple’s new store in the Dubai Mall features 56-metre-long sweeping terrace that gives views to the world’s tallest building: the 830-metre-tall Burj Khalifa. But what is perhaps the most scenic aspect of the new shop which spans two floors is its slick motorized “solar wings” that have been designed to “respond to the ever-changing environmental conditions.”
Developed by high-tech architecture firm Foster + Partners, the solar wings were fabricated from 340 carbon fiber reinforced polymer rods. Conceived as a ‘theatrical experience’, the 18 carefully engineered carbon-fibre panels are inspired by the motion of a falcon spreading its wings and designed to protect the space from the sun pivot out to enclose the space during the day but open to give access to the terrace at night. The shaded terrace features nine trees set within planters, with seating also provided for visitors to sit and relax.
To ensure that the trees receive even sunlight, the planters rotate mechanically.
Apple Dubai Mall will also be the first to launch the new masterclass programme, Today at Apple, which will offer training on photography and filmmaking, among other skills.
