Nestled in the largest game reserve in Southern Tanzania, Azura Selous Game Reserve is a low-key luxury lodge overlooks the Great Ruaha River. Azura has one of the best locations in the Selous, overlooking and within earshot of the melodic river rapids that empty into pools with ever-present hippo, and hours away from any other lodge. Luxury 12 tented villas are decorated in Afro-chic style and feature air conditioning, a seating area and a mosquito net draped over the bed.
Each villa boasts a private plunge pool that overlooks the river, and also comes fitted with a modern bathroom offering an indoor, as well as outdoor shower. Pools are private enough to skinny-dip in, and a real boon during the midday heat (though rooms are air-conditioned). There are no TVs.
The restaurant serves a variety of delicious dishes and guests can enjoy breakfast in the bush to dining under the African skies. Lunch is usually light under the midday sun, while dinner comes from a three-course set menu served in a different, picturesque location each night.
Activities range from exploring the surroundings by experiencing a safari game drive, bird watching or fishing. Each day, guests will embark on a game drive with an expert guide, following fresh footprints as you track the array of wildlife living nearby. Azura Selous is home to three prides of lion, as well as six highly territorial leopards. There are also more wild dog in Selous than anywhere else in Africa, with a number of packs denning close to the lodge. All game drives are made in custom Land Rover vehicles that are ideal for game viewing and photography. Double rooms from $2,100 (£1,705) per night.
