The Anura Rafael Write Time is one of the most intriguing objects we have ever seen because it is a tourbillon wristwatch and fountain pen combined into one. The concept for the Write Time was born from the fertile mind of watchmaking engineer Anura Rafael, who has spent the last 15 or so years working behind-the-scenes contributing to numerous horological projects for some of the world’s best-known brands. With the launch of the Write Time he also launches his own eponymous brand, with the goal of focusing on the development and design of his own products, watches and movements.
The Anura Rafael Write Time features a “linear movement” with a tourbillon at the end, all in a module that can be removed from the watch case and attached to a pen. The time display consists of three rollers (one for the hours and the other two for the minutes) with hand-engraved and hand-painted numerals.
The movement, dubbed the Calibre ARS001/T and consisting of 472 parts, took Rafael two years to develop and features a unique tubular construction with a linear gear train. It is a hand-wound movement and winding is done using a large fluted pink gold crown at one end of the case. The crown winds two barrels in series which provide a power reserve of 48 hours.
The tourbillon, which is visible at one end of the case under the large sapphire crystal, makes a revolution every minute.
Write Time comes complete with a leather watch strap fitted with an 18k rose gold outer case, a sort of holster if you will. The intricately designed pen meanwhile, is also made of 18k gold and encased in the same alligator leather the watch strap is made of. The gold nib is available in different sizes depending on the client’s preference, and it comes with either a piston filler or a cartridge. Rotatable rings, based on a patented internal-tooth lock washer system are used to quickly and easily lock and unlock the time capsule in place on the wristlet or the pen.
As a sort of personal signature, the lock washer teeth will be unique and personalized for every single piece manufactured.
The Anura Rafael Write Time will come in a special leather travel case that safely houses all components of the Write Time along with an inkpot. There are also additional compartments and trays for storing other items. According to Rafael, everything that you see here – the watch, pen, and travel case – are 100% Swiss-made by artisans in the Jura mountain region. It will be made on an individual-commission basis with prices starting from 245,000 CHF.
