Danish speaker manufacturer Bang & Olufsen has announced the future of sound in the shape of its new BeoLab 50 floorstanding speakers. Making a flagship speaker like BeoLab 50 is an uncompromising affair. A meticulous process that mirrors more than nine decades of relentless commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. BeoLab 50 shares several technology patents and features from the radical BeoLab 90, produced for the company’s 90th birthday.
Bang & Olufsen said the BeoLab 90 was designed to go into some homes, as an ultra-exclusive speaker, while the BeoLab 50 is the more consumer-friendly version. New BeoLab 50 delivers truly exceptional performance with innovative sound controls and a uniquely unfolding design. A high-end active loudspeaker with a modest footprint that feels at home in any interior. It has a small footprint overall, but boasts beautiful design with a curved base. This speaker mixes aluminum elements with its warm oak lamellas offering that trademark minimal but striking design sensibility.
Each Beolab 50 speaker is equipped with seven drivers, and each of those drivers has its own 300-watt amplifier built in, delivering a total of 2100 watts, which makes for an incredible amount of control over the sound. Further, the BeoLab 50’s trio of ten-inch woofers, each of which can emit bass in different directions, can fill an entire room with incredible, uber-tight bass.
As a nice touch, hidden on top of the device is a three-fourths-inch tweeter that the company calls an “Acoustic Lens” that rises out of the speaker when you turn it on. This lens can be set to two different positions, narrow or wide, to disperse the sound around the room.
If you’re listening to music by yourself, you’ll likely want it set to the narrow position, if you’re hosting a party, the wide setting will be better.
The BeoLab 50 comes as a pair, with one speaker being the master and the other the slave. All connections are handled by the master speaker, and include digital optical, USB, RCA and S/P-DIF. Alternatively, you can connect wirelessly using the WiSA platform.
The BeoLab 50 is available from authorized retailers for just under $20,000 for one, or $38, 710 for a pair.
