1907 Harley Davidson was sold for US$650,000 during a sale held by Mecum Auctions.
It came straight from the original owner’s family, number 2037 here has been called the “best unrestored Strap Tank in the world.” Its serial number suggests it is the 37th Harley-Davidson built in 1907, making it the company’s 94th machine ever built, including the two prototypes.

By 1907, Harley-Davidson was well on its way to becoming a major player in the growing domestic motorcycle market. Founded in 1903, the company had progressed from building motors for bicycles to building motorized “power-cycles,” what we know today as motorcycles. With help from Ole Evinrude, the company’s single-cylinder engines grew larger and more powerful, and by 1906, Harley-Davidson had expanded from a shed in the Davidson backyard to a 2,400-square-foot factory on Chestnut Street in Milwaukee (known today as Juneau Avenue, and still home to the company’s world headquarters).

Harley-Davidson would build 150 motorcycles in 1907, and serial number 2037, the bike sold at the auction, was the 37th model to roll off the assembly line that year.
