A diamond encrusted purse, officially known as the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse, holds the Guinness World Record for being the most valuable handbag ever produced, with an original price of £2.35 million ($3.8 million) in 2010.
This heart-shaped accessory designed by the jeweller Robert Mouawad is handcrafted from 18-karat gold and covered with 4,517 diamonds – 105 of them yellow, 56 pink and 4,356 colourless. It weighs 381.92 carats.
The intricate diamond work took artisans more than 8,800 hours to create, according to Christie’s, which is handling the private sale.
This is the fashion label’s second record-breaking attempt. In 2003, Mouawad’s £6.8 million Very Sexy Fantasy Bra, made in collaboration with Victoria’s Secret, was modeled by Heidi Klum and was covered with 2,800 diamonds, sapphires and amethysts and weighed 2,200 carats.
