Rolex, which belonged to American actor Paul Newman, was sold at auction in New York for $17,8 million, the world record for wristwatch, said the auction house Philips, which organized the sale.
The legendary actor received the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona as a present from his wife Joanne Woodward in 1968 at the time of filming Winning from James Goldstone, where he played a racing car driver.
The watch was bought by an anonymous customer after 12 minutes of bidding on the phone, said Philips, a watch specialist.

The previous record for the wristwatch was is November 2016 when Philip Pateck watch was sold for $11.1 million in Geneva.
Newman was himself a talented driver and already had an accident on a motorcycle in 1965. His wife wrote on the caseback “Drive carefully.”
The legendary actor, Oscar winner of “The Color of Money” died in 2008 at the age of 84, and since he got his watch, he was wearing it every day until 1984.

The watch that can be seen on many of Numan’s photos from that time disappeared when the actor got the second Daytona watch from his wife, and no one knew what happened to the first Daytona.
He actually gave it his daughter’s then boyfriend, James Cox, while he stayed with the family one summer in the early 1980s.
The watch was sold in the sale of prestigious watches “Winning Icons”, which was organized by Philips. A total of $28,8 million was collected at the auction.
