The Italian supersport car manufacturer presented the futuristic Terzo Millennio concept in collaboration with the American Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
As the name suggests, Lamorghini is a concept designed by Terzo Millennio as a supercar for the third millennium.
To justify its name, the car has an extremely aerodynamic shape, an ultra-lightweight construction and an electric drive.
The power comes from four electric motors powered by a super-capacitor that is incorporated into the bodywork of the vehicle.
Instead of conventional batteries, electricity is stored in special panels that make up the exterior of the car and are made of carbon fiber with a polymer resin.
It is a new type of nanomaterial and super capacitor, where automotive companies have been working with scientists in recent years.
The reinforced structure of carbon fiber practically hides a new type of battery. These panels can be shaped to form elements of the vehicle body. At the same time, the new technology also contributes to a significant reduction in the mass of electric vehicles, which are too heavy due to massive classic drive batteries.
Lamborghini did not publish the specifications, but announced that the powertrain system was designed so that the charging time interval of the batteries would be much shorter than that of modern models on the electricity. In addition, significant savings in electricity consumption have been envisaged, thanks to an improved system for regeneration of vihicle’s kinetic energy.
Since the combination of carbon-fiber materials and high-tech batteries is vulnerable to physical damage during car exploitation, Lamborghini and MIT work together to develop carbon fibers that will “repair” micro-level in case of small cracks . And the slightest damage will be detected in order to “cure” the material itself chemically and prevent further expansion of the cracks.
The technologies presented on this concept still belong to the future and should not be expected in the near future on the serial Lamborghini models.
However, the head of development of the Italian manufacturer says that they are intensively worked on and that some of them are closer to practical use than others.
