Van Gogh’s canvas was the star of Christie’s auction in New York which reaped a whopping $479,3 million overall.
The 1889 painting, “Laboureur dans un champ,” fetched $81,3 million, after a four minute bidding war. It had been estimated to bring in $50 million at Christie’s evening sale of Impressionist and modern art in New York.
The work was created during the artist’s one-year stay at the insane asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, according to presentation on Christie’s website.

The buyer was Rebecca Wei, president of Christie’s Asia.
The highest price paid for a van Gogh at auction was in 1990 when his Portrait of Dr Gachet went for $82,5 million.
