Ferrari F2001 racing car, in which Michael Schumacher won the fourth of seven Formula One World Championship titles, was sold at an auction in New York for a record sum of money for F1 cars.
Although at Sotheby’s auction house cautiously predicted that the Ferrari F2001 will reach the price of between $4 and $5,5 million, it has greatly exceeded their expectations and sold for a much larger sum.
In fact, this is the highest price ever achieved by some F1 car in sales auctions. So far, the most expensive racing car from Formula 1 paid $ 3.2 million (2005), and it’s also a car that was driven by Michael Schumacher – Ferrari F2004.
In F2001, which was sold in New York on November 16 for $7,5 million, Schumacher brought the 11th team title of the champion in this prestigious competition to Ferrari in 2001.
How much this car was superior was shown by the fact that F2001 ended at the winner’s stand, or in one of the first three places, in each race on which it participated. By the way the car set records on many tracks where it had the fastest circles.
Schumacher also won the title in 2001 in a dominant way – he won 9 to 17 races, and in the end he almost doubled points from the closest companion, David Coulthard in McLaren.
In two of these nine victories, in Monaco and Hungary, it was this Ferrari F2001, with chassis number 211, that gave the car a special value.
The car is in running condition, with a 3.0 V10 engine that spins up to 18,500 rpm and develops 900 horsepower, and meets all the conditions to compete in racing of historic sports and racing cars.
