Robby the Robot from the cult the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, sold at auction in New York for $5,36 million, a record amount for a movie props.
Robby the Robot broke the previous record of $4,6 million, which one fan paid for the dress that Merilin Monroe wore in the film “Seven Years of Loyalty”, announced the auction house Bonhams that organized the auction.
“Robby the Robot is one of the symbols of American culture, it is embedded in the DNA of every American,” said Catherine Williamsson, the director of Enterteinment Memorabilia at Bonhams.
A kind of SF icon, recognizable even today – Robby is an example of a good robot, a robot with a personality.
He is helpful and communicative, which is a real step forward in relation to robots from many other science-fiction movies.
He consists of three parts, and its production in the 1950’s costed about $100,000, which would amount to about a million today.
The name of Robby’s buyer was not published.
