The 709-carat diamond found in Sierra Leone has been sold for over $6.5 million.
The diamond is the 14th largest ever found, according to the “Rapaport Group”, which has sold a gemstone at auction in New York on behalf of Sierra Leone.
The company said that 59 percent of the money received from the sale will go to the government of the West African country, while 26 percent will go to diggers who found it.
The discovery of the diamond in March was a sensation.
The Rapaport group called the gemstone a “diamond of peace” and added that its sale would “provide a vital living infrastructure in the area where the diamond was found.”
