Samuel Adams is bringing back Utopias, what it calls “the craft beer community’s most renowned and sought-after extreme barrel-aged beer.”
Only released every two years, Utopias beer is so potent with its 28 percent ABV (alcohol by volume), that it’s illegal in 12 states.
Utopias is a blend of two-row pale, Munich and caramel 60 malts, then three types of German noble hops and yeasts added to make a drink that has 10 percent above the legal limit of some states.

It is also blend of batches, including a 24-year-old Triple Bock and a 17-year-old Millennium, according to a statement on the Sam Adams website. It was aged in Aquavit barrels, “a Scandinavian spirit with distinct flavor from spices and herbs.”
Samuel Adams says “the brew is reminiscent of a rich vintage Port, old Cognac or fine Sherry with notes of dark fruit, subtle sweetness and a deep rich malty smoothness.”

Only 68 casks of beer were produced, meaning just 13,000 bottles are up for grabs nationwide.
Sam Adams’ Utopias also carries a $199 price tag, but comes in a fancy bottle and is meant to be savored, not chugged.
