Design firm Discommon has created a series of coffee table intended for true car enthusiasts. When they started with the idea, they themselves were a little skeptical.
“The original thought was a vehicular shape emerging from liquid metal. I thought, “we could machine that, but it would be crazy”. We’d be removing almost all the material from a 4 foot long, 4 inch thick block of aluminum, leaving a vehicle proud of the table surface. We’d have to commit 50 hours of designer time to model it first and then the same amount in texture development. It was a ridiculous proposition, so we did exactly that.”
And, the reuslt isAutomotive Icons – a series of 10 tables, crafted from hard-anodized aluminum. Each table is machined from a single block of aluminum, each CNC-machined with the help of aluminum experts at Neal Feay. The tables use a hard-anodized 6061 aerospace-grade aluminum and are all carefully finished and textured from top to bottom.
The first two pieces in the series are the Ferrari F40 and Ford GT, machined in exquisite detail, while a Lamborghini Miura is set to be the next model in the lineup. The remaining seven tables will feature the vehicle of choice from whomever commissions it. Discommon will make each vehicle only once.
Tables begin at $20,000 USD depending on complexity of vehicle.
