Ferrari 250 GTO from 1962 became the most expensive car of all time sold at an auction.
After an exciting competition of wealthy classic car collectors held by RM Sotheby’s house in Monterey, this legendary racing Ferrari has reached the price of as much as $48.4 million.
The starting price was $33 million, and the final $44 million, so with the tax included, the above-mentioned historical record reached.
The most expensive car sold at auction was previously also a Ferrari 250 GTO, which in 2013 changed the owner for $38.1 million.
Although the latest record of $48.4 million is remarkable, it’s not the highest amount of money that has been set aside for a Ferrari 250 GTO.
The Ferrari 250 GTO from 1962, which was sold in Monterey, carries the chassis number 3413 GT and is produced the third in a row of a total of 36 specimens produced.
Initially it was used as a test car in Ferrari, and later it was also driven by Formula 1 champion, Phil Hill.
The car was purchased in 2000 by Dr. Greg Whitten, Chairman of Numerix, avid collector car enthusiast and former chief software architect at Microsoft. Under Dr. Whitten’s ownership, the GTO has competed in vintage events around the world over the last two decades, as well as four of the lauded GTO anniversary tours. It’s not clear how much Whitten splashed out on it.
