Almost ten years ago Montblanc launched its Great Characters Limited Edition pen collection, designed to annually honor exceptional figures who have contributed to society, science, and popular culture. Now, German luxury brand pays homage to one of the greatest film stars of all time, James Dean through three collections of writing instruments telling the story of a youthful Dean, over six decades after his untimely death in a car crash at the age of 24.
Montblanc Great Characters James Dean Special Edition pays tribute to the vibrant red jacket Dean wore in his second film ‘Rebel without a Cause.’ The pen’s structure also recalls the structure of jeans, which James Dean was famous for wearing. One of Dean most famous quotes “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today” is engraved around the pen’s cap.
The second collection, limited to 99 pieces, refers to the year 1990, which is the year the American Film Institute ranked James Dean one of the greatest male movie stars of Golden Age Hollywood.
The details of the Montblanc Great Characters James Dean™ Limited Edition 99 are inspired by the legend’s outstanding contribution to cinema. The knife-shaped design of the writing instrument is a tribute to the knife fight from his second film ‘Rebel without a Cause.’ The pen’s barrel is crafted from precious ebony with fittings made of Au 750 solid white gold, giving it the appearance of a closed switchblade.
The third and last collection, limited to 1931 fountain pens and 1931 rollerball pens, refers to the year James Dean was born.
The Montblanc Great Characters James Dean™ Limited Edition 1931 celebrates the big screen legend’s passion for fast cars. His enthusiasm for motorcars was part of this fascination with speed. The Ag 925 sterling silver barrel is engraved with a pattern reminiscent of the oil-cooler grille on the Porsche 550 Spyder, Dean’s car that he famously named ‘Little Bastard.’ The contrasting cap is made of precious wood, with the clip shaped like a gun inspired by the weapon carried by Dean’s character in ‘Giant.’
A red leather notebook and new James Dean red ink complete the collection.
