Porsche 959 in Rothmans color combination, which competed in Paris-Dakar in 1985, was sold for $5,945,000.
This 959 from 1985 was made for the three-time winner of the Dakar Rally, René Metgeand is one of only three cars that Porsche prepared for the Paris-Dakar Rally that year. However, this rally in 1985 was not a happy ending for Porsche, since the two cars crashed, while 959 gave up due to a fault with an oil installation.
As early as next year, Porsche took the first, second and sixth place on the legendary Rally. Porsche made only seven copies of this rally rocket.
Five copies remain and it is believed that two or three are in private collections, including this one. In 1985, the rally version 959 was powered by an atmospheric 3.2-liter six-cylinder boxer engine mounted on the rear.
After retirement, this car lived a different life. The former owner, Jacky Ickx, drove it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it appeared at the Royal Automobile Club in London, and earned the best prize at the Quail event in Monterey. Porsche 959 in the Rothmans color combination was sold during RM Sotheby’s Porsche 70th Anniversary Auction at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.
