The most expensive Mustang ever sold at auction remains the unique Shelby GT500 Super Snake, which recently nearly doubled its previous record!
At the recently held Mecum Kissimmee auction in Florida, Shelby GT500 Super Snake set a new record in the price or, better to say, broke its previous one, which was $1.3 million and “raised the scale” to a fantastic $2.2 million!
The aforementioned Shelby GT500 Super Snake is a concept derived from the 1967 Ford Mustang GT500, where instead of the standard V8 engine of 390 cubic inches and 320 hp, the Shelby 427 was fitted with a total of 600 “horses”, similar to the Ford GT40 Mk II that won in Le Mans in 1966.
What is interesting is that this prototype was created for the purpose of testing Goodyear Thunderbolt pneumatic tires, and during testing on oval tracking, it crosses 500 miles at an average speed of almost 250 km/h!
After that, in 1967, it was soon sold, and for only $5,000, which was not even fortune for that time.
For those who are following closely the auctions and are fans of Mustang, it is certainly noteworthy that in 2013, the Shelby EXP 500 Green Hornet from 1968 reached a figure of as much as $1.8 million, however, the vehicle was not sold because it did not reach the so-called minimum amount set by the seller and the record is still owned by this Super Snake Mustang.
