When it comes to works of exceptional craftsmen, such as Claude Monet, rarely who will doubt their value. Nevertheless, the incredible price of the painting – part of Monet’s “Haystacks” series, which he painted at his home in Giverny, France, indeed, left many without text.
This oil on canvas from 1890 was sold at a price of $110.7 million, and is part of a series that depicts rural life near his home in the Normandy region. The entire series consists of 25 paintings, and many of them can now be purchased at numerous auctions around the world. The last one sold, was previously owned by the family for almost a century, and was purchased directly from the famous artist’s dealer. Then, it was sold at the auction in 1986 at a price of $2 million, to reach the price of $110.7 million just a few days ago.
The sale was organized by the auction house Sotheby’s which says that this artwork is the ninth most expensive ever sold at auction. It is also the first impressionistic painting that has been sold at a price of more than $100 million.
