This year is the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most important events in the history of humanity – the first mission on Moon with people …
Apollo 11 lunar mission was celebrated by the Omega Speedmaster model, which became the first timepiece to successfully complete the Earth-satellite visit on the hands of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. We all waited eagerly for the Omega brand to present its special edition that will be a homage to this special occasion.
They finally did it, and we are introducing you Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary watch. Celebrating the golden jubilee of landing on Moon, the new model has a stainless steel 42 mm diameter, which is accentuated by the new Omega 18-carat Moonshine gold. This alloy for which a patent is awaited, has been developed by the watchmaker’s brand due to long-lasting color stability and slightly less scintillation compared to yellow gold.
The new model is powered by the newest Omega hand-wound mechanism, 3861. The same mechanism is found in all Omega Moonshine Gold models. On this novelty, we can notice several design clues that are a homage to the Apollo 11 mission. The timer has a gray dial with black sub-chronographs for minute chronographs. Moonshine gold was used to create indexes and polar models.
The sub-dial at the position of nine hours shows the Base of Oldrina coming down the ladder of the lunar module. When you turn the watch to the other side, you can see the laser engraved texture of the surface of the Moon, along with a footprint of one astronaut. All this was accompanied by the famous quote of Neil Armstrong: “That’s one small step for a man, but a huge leap for mankind.”
Also included is an additional Velcro strap in blackened cork with golden marks. This is a salute to the Apollo-era “boost protective cover” – a fiberglass structure covered with thick cork ablator, which protected the crew from intense heat during launch. It is presented as a limited edition of 6969 copies, at a price of $9,650.
