Following the huge success of their sportswear hijab, designed in December 2017 and targeting female Muslim athletes, Nike has launched new swimwear collection for those who wear a hijab. Through the new Nike Victory Swim Collection, women can choose from a full body swimsuit or individual pieces including a swimming hijab, a tunic top and leggings.
“Too often,” the company said in a statement, “swimwear represented a barrier, rather than a conduit to enjoying the water.”
The flagship product is the $600 Victory swimsuit, a black two-piece with a built-in headscarf and sports bra in a shiny “mermaid” finish. The Nike Pro Hijab might have worked well on land, but making it work underwater proved more difficult than expected, with 55 design iterations over the course of 18 months.
The brand says the collection was inspired by swimmers who found the current options, which don’t provide full coverage, were a “barrier” to enjoying the sport.
The new line will be available for sale online starting Feb. 1, and at some retailers in California, New York City, London and Dubai, the company announced Tuesday.
