American General George Smith Patton is one of the most important and iconic figures of World War II. Patton distinguished himself as a brilliant commander of armored units in the battles of northern Africa, Sicily, and especially that of the turning point in the Ardennes, in the winter of 1945.
In his forty-six-year military career, he commanded two world wars. History remembers him as an extraordinary military leader, but at the whim of the unstable and disobedient. He died in late 1945 as a result of a car accident in Germany. His diary, “War As I Knew It”, was posthumously published.
Patton’s Dodge WC-57
Patton used a modified Dodge WC-57 in command of Germany after the Allied landing in Normandy in June 1944. This military SUV, made by Dodge in 1942 – 1945, was adapted in 1944 in England for the needs of an American general. The vehicle has been provided with additional metal plates at the rear and forward as firearm protection, and since it served as Gen. Patton’s command car, it is also equipped with special sirens and a three-star metal flag flag. This Dodge was armed with a .50 caliber machine gun made by Browning, which was primarily used to fire enemy aircraft in the event that any of them noticed a U.S. General’s command vehicle.
Paton’s command SUV has been carefully restored and will be offered for sale at the WorldWideAuctioneers auction in mid-June in Obern, Indiana.
