The first association when something is made of leather is the skin of an animal. But, to the general joy of PETA’s fans the fashion industry is being redefined with sustainable vegan leather options that replace animal skin permanently. So it can be said that it is not news that some accessories are made of a bio-based vegan materials derived from apples, bananas or as in this case from grapes. Yes, following this trend Dutch shoemaker Mercer Amsterdam has launched a pair of vegan leather sneakers made from Italian wine waste.
W3RD Wine Pack
Dubbed the ‘W3RD Wine Pack‘ – these trainers were made in collaboration with Italian firm Vegea, which specialises in the production of vegan leather.
Vegea creates a “soft, smooth and 100% sustainable” vegan leather using the skins, stalks and seeds of grapes left over from the winemaking process. The sneaker range also features mesh made from recycled PET bottles and an algae-based EVA sole.
With an RRP of €250, the trainers form part of Mercer Amsterdam’s Spring / Summer 2021 collection, will be available in four colours when launch in December.
