Nauta Design recently shared insights into the captivating design of the first Southern Wind SW108 Gelliceaux, a remarkable addition to the SW108 Smart Custom series. Engineered as a diesel-electric hybrid with naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design and exterior and interior design by Nauta, Gelliceaux stands out as a pinnacle of sophistication and functionality.
Exterior Design: Gelliceaux, a 35.41-meter yacht, represents the evolution of Southern Wind’s ‘GT’ series. The exterior lines have been meticulously crafted to achieve a sportier and more dynamic appearance, with direct input from the owner. The deckhouse, adorned in teak with a central skylight, showcases innovative features such as teak-sided decks morphing into ‘floating’ bench seats—a design element proudly introduced by Nauta Design.
A defining feature is the Z-shaped composite coaming of the deckhouse, resembling a stylized lightning bolt, providing the yacht with a low-rise, agile profile. The owner’s involvement in the design process was instrumental, contributing to a unique blend of elegance and functionality.
Interior Design: Massimo Gino, co-founder of Nauta Design, sheds light on the interior design, emphasizing the owners’ active participation. The split-level saloon, a key highlight, radiates a calming and ‘Mediterranean fresh’ ambiance. Nauta Design skillfully incorporates a natural color palette, fabric-lined walls, and contrasting light and dark veneers in Alpi wood composite.
The design choice of making fixed furniture appear freestanding creates a cozier atmosphere, reminiscent of open space interior designs. The bespoke sofa seating in the saloon mirrors the comfort of contemporary residential designs, while the dining area features carefully selected chairs around an 8-person table.
Attention to Detail: Nauta Design’s meticulous attention to detail extends to the absence of stainless steel accents in the interiors. Satin-finished black bathroom fittings, handrails, and accessories not only exude a contemporary feel but also simplify cleaning for the crew. The lighting design, executed with high-quality hardware adapted for onboard use, enhances the yacht’s practicality and atmosphere.
Seamless Integration of Technology: Designed as a diesel-electric hybrid, Gelliceaux seamlessly integrates advanced technology for efficient and eco-friendly sailing. The yacht has already proven its capabilities, sailing almost 12,000 miles since its delivery in October 2023. A maiden voyage from Cape Town to Lanzarote, covering 7,500 miles, showcased Gelliceaux’s prowess, instilling confidence in the owners to cross the Atlantic and embrace the Caribbean for the winter season.
In conclusion, the Southern Wind SW108 Gelliceaux is not merely a yacht; it’s a harmonious blend of design brilliance, technological innovation, and owner-inspired elegance, setting new standards in the world of luxury sailing.
