Julia Child fans will be delighted to hear that her home in Provence, near the French Riviera will be open for visitors this summer. They will be able to enjoy in the same kitchen where Julia Child tested recipes for the second volume of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” In 1993, La Pitchoune became home to the culinary school ‘Cooking with Friends in France’ run by American Kathie Alex. Now, the light-filled stucco cottage that Julia and Paul Child built on a former potato patch 35 years ago is set to embark on a new chapter. Current owners of the property, Boston couple Makenna and Yvonne Johnston who purchased it last November from Alex has a new plans for it. This time La Pitchoune will be a guest house that opens in June, and a ‘culinary retreat,’ which will serve up cooking lessons.
To make things more official cooking-wise, Yvonne Johnston, who was also a passionate home cook, enrolled in and is finishing up a culinary degree at International Culinary Center in New York City. Makenna Johnston is also enrolling in a number of intensive courses at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, where Child received her culinary degree.
The weeklong Courageous Cooking classes will be limited to six guests, and include breakfasts and lunches, excursions throughout the local area and yoga. Sessions will start in April 2017.
