Chef Angelito Araneta Jr. who is known all over the world as “Karat Chef”, holds the Guinness record for the most expensive sushi in the world. In June 28 2010, Angelito put an odd twist to a typical seafood-topped nigira sushi. Apart from the traditional Japanese preparation, Angelito made his masterpiece extra special by garnishing it with no less than 24 carats of thin gold sheets and 0.20 carat of African diamonds. This luxury plate costs $1,978.15 or a whopping 91, 800 Philippine pesos – officially making it the most expensive sushi ever made.
“Angelito Araneta Jr.’s golden sushi is made of Japanese rice, Norwegian pink salmon, sea cucumber, mango, foie gras, crab, wild saffron and butter mayonnaise. Adding more flavor to the dish are Italian balsamic vinegar and Muscovado sugar.”
Angelito doesn’t limit his skills in making gold-laced sushi. In fact, he also adds gold cocktail (costs 6,000 pesos) and golden roast beef among his list of specialties. He also made rabbit-shaped rice cakes covered with gold and small pieces of diamonds which costs $2,700.
