Just last June, we reported about: the shiny pink crocodile-skin Hermes Birkin bag sold at Christie’s International Plc in Hong Kong for HK$1.72 million ($223,000), setting the record for the most expensive bag ever sold at auction. Now, another Birkin has toppled its price to become the new most expensive handbag resold in the world. Florida-based luxury bag dealer Privé Porter has sold this bag which has never been used to an anonymous buyer in Los Angeles. It’s about a 35-centimeter Birkin from 2008 in rouge Braise croc skin with 18-karat white gold and diamond hardware, at a total weight of more than ten carats. The original asking price was $360,000, so the owner still got a pretty great deal.
This is the latest record-breaking purchase in the luxury resale market which has been rapidly expanding in recent years. The luxury resale market for Birkin bags is at an all-time high and big names like Christie’s, The RealReal and Portero are trying to obtain the bags for resale. Privé Porter’s stock, which is sold primarily through its posts on Instagram, is almost entirely comprised of Birkin bags. It recently displayed their bags at the 2015 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in November, where it showcased $2 million worth of Birkins on a luxury yacht.
