This sale just set a new world record for the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold at auction! Remember the Nike Mags – the dope self-lacing sneakers from the classic sci-fi adventure flick Back to the Future? Well, they’ve just sold at the Hong Kong auction for a whopping HK$810,000, which roughly converts to $104,000. Hong Kong auction house Dragon 8 claims the transaction has made the Mags the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold at an auction.
In addition to the Hong Kong event, there will be two more auctions of the Nike Mags – one in London later this month and one in New York at the MJFF benefit gala on November 12.
Though not exactly a 100% working replica of those from “Back to the Future,” the 2016 Nike Mag can perfectly fit any foot using Adaptive Fit technology. There are sensors that will decide whether to tighten or loosen the shoe, ensuring that each shoe will adapt according to the foot’s measurements.
The 2016 Nike Mag is a product by the joint venture of Nike and The Michael J. Fox Foundation to help in speeding up a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
