A meteorite 4.5 billion years old, almost as a planet Earth, was sold at an online auction for nearly €16,000.
On the website of the online auction house Catawiki, the Muonionalusta meteorite was billed as the “oldest known meteorite on Earth.” It weighs 26.5kg (58lbs) and is said to be excellent quality.
This stone from the universe was found in the early 1900s, not far from the village of Kitkiojärvi in the Swedish region of Pajala. He is part of the famous Muonionalusta meteorite collection.
This meteorite fell in northern Scandinavia about a million years ago and so far around 40 of its pieces have been found in the region.
In addition to the meteorite, the customer also received a certificate of authenticity.
The seller of the meteorite is listed as “Fallen Angel” from Spain. Claes Hain of Catawiki said there was hope that the item would be bought by a Swede and returned to Sweden – however it’s eventual buyer was from Hungary.
