We have written about floating homes several times. But Arkup floating homes are a bit different. These solar-powered, zero-emission livable yachts are packed with green goodness and are extremely safe and, thanks to the inclusion of self-elevating systems, can withstand high winds, floods and hurricanes.
Designed in collaboration between Dutch architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio and Arkup, “avant-garde life on water” company based in Miami, the floating homes are 100% off-the-grid structures that feature waste management, rainwater harvesting and purification systems.

Olthuis claims that the moveable home would be able to withstand winds of up to 156 mph, classified as a Category 4 hurricane. It’s designed to be buoyed so that when water levels rise during a storm, it will bob with the water.
The 4,350-square-foot yachts are equipped with 30 kW of solar panels, 1,000 kWh of lithium-ion batteries and high grade insulation.
Arkup expect each home to cost over $2 million, with plans to start selling ’em next summer. The first prototype is expected to be built on the Miami River in 2018, with plans to take them to Tokyo and New York in the coming years.
