We all admire the day when Ferris Bueller made the sick to get out of school, but what we admire far more is the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, which Ferris “borrowed” from his father’s best friend to drive the streets of Chicago.
It’s time for someone else to play Ferris in real life because one of the three cars used in filming will be on the Mecum 2018 Monterey auction next month.
Believe it or not, the main actor of the movie, Matthew Broderick, does not actually drive the real Ferrari in the movie. The car from the movie is a replica, specifically Modena GT Spyder California from 1985.
Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder
Neil Glassmoyer and Mark Goyett founded a company called “Modena Design and Development” to produce the Modena GT Spyder, based on the original Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder.
For the reason that the true Ferrari 250 GT would cost a fortune, director and comedian John Hughes contacted Modena to make two complete cars and one body for a movie in just four weeks. The replica from the movie is powered by a 5.0 liter V8 with four carburettors connected to a five-speed manual transmission. The chassis of the square tubes used by the replica was made by Bob Webb, one of the people who made the Roger Penske Zerex Special. Modena has added several elements in Ferrari’s style, such as windshield, direction indicators, a radiator mask, and air vents on the wings. The car will be auctioned on August 25 in Monterey, California.
