Startup company Nuro joined the Domino’s pizza chain in order to start pizza delivery by self-driving vehicles by the end of the year in Houston.
Nuro, which produces small delivery autonomous vehicles, has already launched a service to deliver foodstuffs to customers at Scottsdale, Arizona, earlier this year, and soon these four-wheelers will also drive to Texas without a driver. An autonomous R1, half as small as the average compact passenger car, will deliver Domino’s pizza to the customers of this pizza chain in Houston.

Nuro vehicles are completely autonomous, but at this stage, the company still uses an assist vehicle with technicians that monitor the ride and delivery. So far, the manufacturer has made six copies of the robotized R1 car, with plans to build more vehicles and an improved R2 model, as soon as new investments of around one billion dollars are announced by the Japanese company SoftBank.
Otherwise, this is not the first time that Domino’s is trying to start delivering pizzas without drivers, since a similar pilot program was implemented in cooperation with Ford in 2017. Nuro was founded by two engineers who previously worked for Gugl on a self-driving car program, and at the beginning of 2019 they secured SoftBank’s investment worth nearly a billion dollars.
