NewYork Times Square Concorde Model
This half-scale model of Concorde in British Airways livery that was part of their advertisement in Times Square will be auctioned soon. A huge model of the flagship supersonic Concorde will be sold at Bonhams’ Space History Sale on May 5, for the expected amount of $100,000 – $150,000.
The model was built by L&L Tooling of Texas and is made of fibreglass and steel and measures 102 ft. long with a 42-ft. wing span, weighing 24,000 lbs. The Concorde replica was shipped to New York on five trailers and placed four stories above the most famous and busiest intersection in the world: Broadway and 42nd Street, directly across from One Times Square. It was there from 1996 to 2001.
The model was removed in 2001, when the lease on the site expired, and it was re-developed. It was donanted to the Cradle of Aviation museum on Long Island.
The front and rear cabin doors of the Concorde model are marked with silver surrounds, sides of fuselage with the British Airways name and swoosh, aft fuselage with registration number “G-BOAA” and the tail with BA’s stylized Union Jack logo. Concorde service was discontinued in 2003. [Bonhams]
