The Gagarin Tourbillon Watch
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic journey into space, Swiss watch-maker Bernhard Lederer, has designed the Gagarin Tourbillon Watch. Unlike in other mechanical watches, this tourbillon doesn’t stay in one place, but orbits around the watch dial, which bears the names of places and cities Gagarin passed in his Vostok-1 spacecraft back in 1961.
The Gagarin Tourbillon Watch features a 60-second orbital flying tourbillon that rotates counterclockwise around the dial counter in 108 minutes, the same time it took Gagarin took to orbit the earth. There is also a magnifying glass fitted within the orbital flying tourbillon that’s allows you to appreciate the detailing on the watch face and the mechanics within its movement. The tourbillon is suspended by a sweeping bridge inspired by the 25-meter commemorative statue at Gagarin’s landing site near Engels, Russia.
The tourbillon boasts a mechanical manual winding movement entirely developed and produced by Bernhard Lederer in Switzerland, providing a power reserve of approximately 80 hours. Other fine specs include, a case made out of Platinum 950, sapphire crystal display, micro-engraved text with highlights of Yuri Gagarin’s flight and a complex movement with 264 components and 35 jewels. The watch is strapped on black hand-stitched alligator strap with platinum tang buckle.
