The Home Alone Home
Most of us well remember a little boy (Macaulay Culkin) mistakenly left at home by his vacationing family. He outwits inept burglars who try to rob the place. A red brick house, which featured in John Hughes and Chris Columbus’s Home Alone and the beginning of Home Alone 2, is for sale for $2.4 million.
Home Alone house is located in the village of Winnetka, IL, which is approximately 20 miles north of downtown Chicago and just a few blocks from Lake Michigan. The 14-room home sits on a half-acre lot and contains 4,250 square feet. Among its four bedrooms is a master suite that spans one wing and includes a sunroom and sitting room with a carved marble fireplace mantle. The famous house also features a gourmet kitchen and a dormered attic bedroom and a detached garage.
The owners of the stately, oversized Georgian house, John and Cynthia Abendshien said they are ready to downsize, since their daughter who became Culkin’s playmate during the six-month-long shoot is grown up. The family lived in the house throughout most of the filming, moving into the four-room master bedroom suite.
The home’s owners said they had been approached by Hughes’ production company about using the house for his previous feature, Uncle Buck, but refused because they were just settling in and had not sold their old home. When the location manager returned 18 months later, they agreed to turn their home into a movie set.
Unfortunately there will be no open houses for this hot property, so qualified buyers must make an appointment for a viewing. It would be a zoo, said Marissa Hopkins of Coldwell Banker.
