Blancpain recently unveiled its latest creation, the Fifty Fathoms Act 3, in Cannes, France, paying homage to the birthplace of the world’s first true dive watch in 1953. The inspiration behind this remarkable timepiece traces back to the underwater wonders off the coast of Cannes, where Blancpain’s CEO, Jean-Jacques Fiechter, discovered the need for a reliable dive watch during a perilous underwater experience in 1950.
The Fifty Fathoms Act 3, marking the culmination of a year-long celebration, is a 41.3mm bronze gold dive instrument, limited to 555 pieces worldwide. The absence of a date complication, replaced by a mil-spec water-resistance mark at 6 o’clock, nods to the military watches of the 1960s. The choice of bronze gold, comprising 37.5% gold, 50% copper, and the remainder in silver, palladium, and gallium, adds a vintage aesthetic while minimizing patination compared to standard bronze.
The distinctive case material introduces a new chapter for Blancpain, with potential differences noted from Omega’s use of bronze gold. The exclusivity of this alloy to Blancpain adds a layer of intrigue and raises questions that prospective owners may want to explore further with the brand’s experts.
Limited to 555 pieces, the choice of this number traces back to the reference in Ariel’s Song from The Tempest, where the name Fifty Fathoms emerged in 1953. The alliterative tribute adds an interesting nuance to the collection dynamics.
Beyond the aesthetics, the Final Fathoms boasts a new evolution of movement, the calibre 1154.P2, featuring an escapement with a silicon hairspring and an escape wheel in antimagnetic alloys. The antimagnetic movement can withstand 1,000 Gauss without the need for a soft iron inner case. With a remarkable 100 hours of power reserve, the Final Fathoms solidifies Blancpain’s leadership in standard-issue power reserve for mechanical dive watches.
The launch event in Cannes, the birthplace of the Fifty Fathoms inspiration, was a momentous occasion, blending the watch’s military history with its contemporary elegance. The price of USD 44,800 may raise eyebrows, but the Final Fathoms represents a significant milestone for Blancpain, likely to attract enthusiasts and collectors alike.
In a remarkable achievement, the launch managed to stay under wraps, with no leaks ahead of time, generating heightened interest. Blancpain successfully merged its diving heritage with the art of living concept at the Ille Saint-Marguerite location, making the event an unforgettable experience.
As the Final Fathoms makes waves in the horological world, its unique blend of history, innovation, and elegance positions it as a must-have for watch aficionados seeking a timeless and exclusive timepiece.
