The Unique Auburn Custom Speedster: Contrary to the norm, not all glamorous speedsters from the era were supercharged. Auburn factory records reveal the existence of a single un-supercharged speedster, crafted in the highest-tier naturally aspirated Custom trim with the two-speed Dual Ratio rear axle. Built in the original Auburn production facility in Auburn, Indiana, this car showcases an unusual specification, attributed to its completion for show and exhibition purposes before Auburn superchargers were ready. The early serial number, devoid of the “3” prefix seen on supercharged examples, supports this claim. Both the serial and engine number tags remain original, as evidenced by the engine stamping on the block.
Provenance and Restoration: Formerly owned by Mark Vantatenbow and part of the roster of surviving 851/852 speedsters, this unique speedster then journeyed through the hands of collectors such as Robert M. Pass and the late John M. O’Quinn. From the O’Quinn collection, it found a place in Richard Burdick’s Dick’s Classic Garage Museum in San Marcos, Texas, for a decade. Acquired by a prominent Texas enthusiast in 2019, the car underwent an immaculate fresh body-on-frame restoration, presenting itself today in beautiful Duck Egg Blue exterior and rich red leather interior.
