Forget Kate Middleton! The dressmakers working overtime on copycat gowns for brides-to-be, who all want to look like Pippa.
A replica of the dress worn by Pippa Middleton for the Royal Wedding in April is set to go on sale at Debenhams. After being bombarded by fanatics that wanted a similar dress to that of Pippa’s, Debenhams will attempt to cash in on the idea. The original dress, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, reportedly cost around £20,000 ($33,000). The replica, however, will cost £170 ($280).
The dress that so caught the imagination of the public is now the most requested in bridal ateliers – but it’s brides, rather than bridesmaids who are besotted. The bargain gown features the same cowl neck and button detail on the back which made the original so famous, but has missed out the fine detailing along the neckline and sleeves.
So great is the anticipated demand that the retailer has taken the unusual step of creating a ‘lady-in-waiting list’ to allow customers to reserve the departments store’s homage to Pippa Middleton’s figure-hugging bridesmaid gown ahead of its launch later this year. The ivory dress worn by Pippa is the most requested by far, said Alain Mehada, chief personal shopper at the Debenhams Oxford Street store.
Such is the demand for all things Pippa, the retailer will also stock a £99 ($1620) version of the emerald green Alice Temperley evening gown that Pippa wore to the evening reception at Buckingham Palace. Fans of what the child bridesmaids wore to the wedding will no doubt be delighted to learn that a flower girl dress will sit alongside the copy of Pippa’s gown. Priced between £48 and £52 ($78 – $85) (depending on age) the dress features a delicate lace trim, puff sleeves and a pale gold sash bow. [Debenhams via Daily Mail]
