An exceptionally rare bottle of The Glenlivet Whisky, distilled in 1883 and bottled in 1931 by George & John Gordon Smith, goes on sale in Edinburgh next month with an auctioneer’s guide price of as much as$30,740. The Scotch, to be sold by Bonhams on Oct. 12, was distilled on May 19th, 1883, and bottled in December 1931, the company said in statement.

The Bonhams bottle has an impeccable pedigree. It was originally owned by Captain William Smith Grant, the great grandson of Colonel George Smith founder of The Glenlivet Distillery and has been in the family ever since. It is very rare for a whisky of this age with such an excellent provenance to come up at auction. It will still be perfectly drinkable though at several hundred pounds a dram it is perhaps more likely to remain in the bottle, said Martin Green, Bonhams whisky specialist.
This is not for the first time that any Glenlivet whiskey bottle is up for sale. Earlier this year, a 71-year-old single malt Generations Glenlivet whisky sold for £15,000 with proceeds going towards the British Red Cross Japan Appeal for victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
Apart from the The Glenlivet whiskey that was distilled in 1883, The Macallan-50 year old whiskey is also up for sale at the Bonham’s Edinburg Whisky Sale. This Macallan 50-year-old bottle was distilled in 1928 and bottled in 1983. Only 500 such bottles are available across the world and the bottle number 50 is up for sale which has been estimated to fetch around $15,500 to $18,500.
