A rare gold Rolex watch, once owned by India”s first president Dr Rajendra Prasad, goes under the hammer as part of a collection of rare timepieces by Sotheby’s auction house next month.
This historic 18K pink gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual was possibly gifted to him on the first Republic Day in 1950. The watch is decorated with the map of India with the date 26 January, 1950 inscribed on it. The map of India on the dial includes the corridor of land linking India to Afghanistan and Nepal.
Prasad’s watch is estimated to fetch between $222,000 to $444,000. Around 270 other rare timepieces from the post WWI era that belonged to other famous leaders will be also auctioned by Sotheby’s Geneva on November 13, 2011. This collection of unique timepieces is expected to bring in more than $8.9 million.
